Examination Pattern

IELTS comprises of four testing modules:

•    Listening

•    Reading

•    Writing

•    Speaking

All the candidates would be taking the similar listening and speaking modules. The choice is between academic and general training in the reading and writing modules. Additionally the exam pattern is mentioned below:

•    Listening Test- This has 4 sections and 40 items which needs to be answered within 30 minutes.

•    Reading Test- 3 sections and 40 items to be attempted within 60 minutes.

•    Writing Section- General Training Writing section with 2 tasks (150 and 250 words) in 60 minutes. Academic Writing Section- 2 tasks (150 and 250 words) within 60 minutes and the choice between these two in the writing module.

•    Speaking Section- This section expands over 11 to 14 minutes and this module can be taken at the discretion of the test centre in the period of seven days before and after the other modules. The tests are designed to cover the entire range of ability from non-user to expert user.
