It seems Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) students will have to wait more before their campus becomes WiFi enabled.
The authorities had earlier announced that they would make the campus WiFi enabled in 2010, but at present, only the university library and School of Information Technology have the facility. The service will be of great help to agro technocrats as they have to prepare projects and thesis. Ravinder Singh Randhawa, president of PAU students' association, said, ''Nowadays, internet is important for students. As broadband charges are high, every student cannot afford it, therefore the authorities should keep their promise." Jalaj Batta, a student of MSc honours in PAU, said, ''We have to visit cyber cafes to get assistance for research projects. If the campus has WiFi facility, much of our burden will be lessened.''
Paramdeep Kaur, another student of MSc honours in PAU, said, ''At night, we hostellers have ample of time to surf the internet. But with campus devoid of WiFi facility, we have to wait till morning to visit cyber cafes.'' Deputy director, School of Information Technology, PAU, OP Gupta said several formalities have to be addressed to make the campus WiFi-enabled. ''Mapping work has been done for installing antenna on the campus and validation process is on. The service has not been enabled due to security reasons,'' he added.
Sources, however, said service has not been enabled due to shortage of funds.
