Aligarh Muslim University students Tuesday staged a sit-in outside Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis' office to demand restoration of their union which was dissolved in 2007.

The vice chancellor's office blamed outsiders for inciting trouble on the campus. An official said the students were invited for talks but nobody turned up.

The agitating students told senior faculty members that nothing less than the declaration of the date of students' union election was acceptable to them.

Around 6.30 p.m. a group of seven agitating students came forward to meet university officials but their allegedly aggressive posture and sudden walkout prevented an outcome.

The union was dissolved in 2007 with the approval of the executive council following arson in the university.

The university has appealed to the students to withdraw their agitation.
